Keep your pets warm this winter

The summer months are slowly drawing to a close and the weather will soon be turning cooler.

While we all prepare to snuggle up in our winter knits in front of the fire, it’s important not to forget about our furry friends. To make the most of the cooler months, follow our guide to winter survival:

• As the mercury drops, don’t leave your dog outside unattended – they can easily develop hypothermia.
• When venturing outside for daily walks, consider whether your pet may need a winter coat or jacket, particularly for short-haired breeds.
• Just as pavements and footpaths can be too hot in summer, icy footpaths can be painful in winter. Think whether you would be comfortable walking barefoot. If the answer is no, consider staying home and playing indoor games to keep them stimulated.
• In the cooler months, cats often seek shelter in warm car engines or behind car tires. Take the time to have a quick check to prevent serious injury to pets.
• Your pets may want to stay indoors and sleep, snuggled up by the fire. Consider reducing their food intake to prevent them from stacking on the weight while they are a bit less active.
• And don’t forget our miniature buddies! If you have guinea pigs or rabbits, ensure their hutch is positioned out of the rain and wind, cover the open areas with a blanket and give them plenty of good quality hay and bedding.
