The 1940s House – an Art Thrown Away
What we threw away can tell us a lot about the past – archaeologists find hard evidence, and sometimes only traces of materials, but historians look to words – printed written and more recently recorded.
In between these evidences of the past lie the discarded wrappers, price labels torn off, adverts in theatre programmes, before becoming bonfires of paper words which were relevant only for a moment in time – a newspaper, a birthday card, an envelope or a gas bill. Eventually this ‘clutter’ is cleared away, tidily.
