The History of Women in the Metropolitan Police
In the early 1900’s after a hard fought battle, women were allowed to join Police Forces in the UK. However, in 1973 with the arrival of equal opportunities, the role of the female officer changed forever. Author of ‘A Girl in Blue’ Lois Willoughby-Easter was a WPC at the time, she will recount how young female police officers in the 70’s faced what would be seen today as sexism and bullying, but they eventually earned the respect of their male peers, albeit grudgingly.
